Hawaii OSHA Requirements

Hawaii operates its own OSHA-approved state plan through HIOSH, which means the state enforces its own workplace safety standards that are at least as strict as federal OSHA. The training requirements under 29 CFR 1910.178 still apply, and Easy Forklift Certification's online course meets HIOSH's requirements for the classroom/online portion of forklift operator training. Your employer must still conduct a hands-on evaluation at your specific workplace.

Hawaii Forklift Certification FAQ

Is online forklift certification valid in Hawaii?
Yes. Hawaii follows federal OSHA standards (29 CFR 1910.178). Easy Forklift Certification's online course satisfies the formal instruction requirement that OSHA mandates. After completing our course, your employer conducts a hands-on evaluation at your specific workplace. This two-step process is the same whether you train online or in a classroom.
How long does Hawaii forklift certification take?
About 45 minutes for most people. The course is self-paced, so you can go faster or slower. After you pass the exam, your certificate is available for immediate download. The employer hands-on evaluation typically adds 30 to 60 minutes, scheduled at your workplace.
How much do forklift operators make in Hawaii?
The median forklift operator pay in Hawaii is $53,640 a year ($25.79 an hour), according to BLS May 2025 data for industrial truck and tractor operators. Half of operators earn more than that. Pay varies by city, industry, and shift.
Do I need to renew my forklift certification in Hawaii?
OSHA requires your employer to evaluate you at least every 3 years, plus refresher training after an accident, near miss, or a switch to a new type of truck. This applies in Hawaii and every other state. If you've been certified before, our $49 recertification covers the refresher training. Set a calendar reminder for 2 years and 10 months out so you are not scrambling at the deadline.
Can my Hawaii employer accept an online forklift certificate?
Yes. OSHA does not require in-person classroom training. The standard (29 CFR 1910.178) requires formal instruction, which can be delivered online, plus a hands-on evaluation at your workplace. Your employer conducts and documents that evaluation.
What if I fail the forklift certification exam?
You can retake it as many times as you need at no extra charge. The exam requires an 80% score to pass. Most people pass on their first attempt. Not sure if you're ready? Try our free forklift practice test first.
How much does forklift certification cost in Hawaii?
Easy Forklift Certification's online course costs $59 per operator. This includes the full training course, certification exam with unlimited retakes, and an instant downloadable certificate. Employers certifying multiple operators should check our group pricing, which starts at $30 per person for teams of 10 or more.
What types of forklifts does the certification cover?
Our certification covers all powered industrial truck classes (I through VII) as defined by OSHA. This includes sit-down counterbalance forklifts, narrow aisle forklifts, order pickers, pallet jacks, and rough terrain forklifts. The same certification applies whether you operate in a Honolulu warehouse or a Hawaii outdoor lumber yard.
