Why operators in Memphis get certified

Memphis handles other people's cargo for a living, and forklift work follows it. Presidents Island is a 1,000-acre industrial park on the Mississippi River that holds 95 percent of the industries inside the Port of Memphis's jurisdiction. The port itself ranks second among inland ports on the shallow-draft Mississippi and sixth in the country. Next to it sits the Frank C. Pidgeon Industrial Park, industrial land the Memphis and Shelby County Port Commission manages directly.

Out on Lamar Avenue, BNSF runs a 180-acre intermodal yard at 4814 Lamar that moves more than 300,000 container lifts a year. A lift is a box changing from one mode of transport to another. Containers get unloaded, pallets come off them, and operators move the pallets, which is why warehouse space clusters along that corridor instead of somewhere more scenic. Work on that side of town runs on a clock that does not stop for anybody.

Then there is the airport. Memphis International is home to the FedEx World Hub and one of the busiest cargo airports in the world, with an industrial area around it built to match. Logistics and distribution is the region's leading industry, with manufacturing and healthcare behind it. Between the river, the rail yard and the runway, this metro handles freight in every form it arrives in.

The hiring follows the freight. BLS reported 7,950 industrial truck and tractor operators in the Memphis, TN-MS-AR metro in its May 2025 figures, with a median wage of $44,540 a year. Those employers all work under the same rule. OSHA requires an operator to be trained and evaluated before running a powered industrial truck, and the employer keeps the record on file, so an OSHA-compliant certificate is usually the first thing a warehouse supervisor asks to see when you apply.

Getting the classroom half done takes about an hour online. It costs $59, the certificate is issued the same day, and the formal instruction requirement is satisfied. Your employer still runs the hands-on evaluation on their own equipment, because that part has to happen where the work happens. Applying to a Presidents Island plant or a Lamar Avenue warehouse already certified means nobody has to wait on training before your first shift.

OSHA rules that apply in Memphis

Tennessee runs its own state OSHA plan in place of federal enforcement, with standards at least as strict as federal OSHA's. Tennessee OSHA (TOSHA) Memphis Local Office enforces it in the Memphis area. Phone 1-800-249-8510.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l) requires two things: formal instruction, which our online course provides, and a hands-on evaluation by your employer on the equipment you will actually use. Both steps apply everywhere in Tennessee, including Memphis. Source: OSHA.

Is online forklift certification legit? Three ways to get certified in Memphis

OSHA requires two things before anyone drives a forklift on the job: formal instruction, plus a hands-on evaluation from your employer on the actual truck you'll operate. Online certificates picked up a bad reputation because a lot of buyers skipped that second step and treated the certificate as the whole process.

Our course handles the first step properly: real OSHA-compliant instruction, not a rubber stamp. Your employer still has to watch you operate and sign off on a short written evaluation afterward, and that's exactly the step a classroom graduate has to complete too. Neither path skips it.

Online with us

About 45 minutes of theory from instructors who teach this all day, for $59. Then your employer's hands-on evaluation, and your certificate is ready the same day.

Olympic Career Training Institute runs a 3-hour class at its southeast Memphis location. Scheduled in advance, and you still do the same employer evaluation afterward.

Your employer does it all

Legal under OSHA. But your supervisor is not a trainer, and most workplaces have no written training program of their own, so many employers prefer you arrive with the theory already done.
